From 5 to 7 September 2014 Mars Society Polska held an international competition for student mars rovers in Podzamcze near Chęciny. European Rover Challenge 2014 was the first competition of this kind held in Poland and in Europe. By the courtesy of PARP (Polish Agency for Enterprise Development), Astronika had the chance to showcase its profile in the impressive Leonardo da Vinci Science Centre, opened recently by the Regional Science-Technology Centre. Astronika presented two of its current projects: a hammering mechanism developed for NASA’s Insight mission to Mars, commissioned by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and Astronika’s own original concept: a highland terrain hopper called Galago. The Mars-like terrain created especially for the ERC 2014 enabled Astronika to showcase Galago’s possible performance on the Red Planet (a 1:1 model of the hopper was created by Glazevski Robotics).
Additionally to the competition, Mars Society Polska also held a science conference entitled “Humans in Space”. During the conference one of Astronika’s engineers, Łukasz Wiśniewski held a presentation entitled “Mars Exploration – how we do it”, in which he described the specific types of mechanisms developed and enhanced by Astronika.
